Port Glasgow 1   v   2 Greenock Juniors

Harry McLachlan double secures win for Greenock in Derby

Greenock Juniors edged the Inverclyde Derby to take the points in this hard-fought Cup Tie., The match, if not the best in recent years, did produce some excellent football from individuals in both sides.

In particular Greenock were indeed fortunate keeper Sean Graham was in tip-top form as he pulled off 2 tremendous saves to keep them in contention. While for Port, Joe Beckley proved what an impact he can make in any game with a cracking performance on the right flank.

Brian Heron's 11 looked the hungrier  right from the kick-off, with McEwan delivering telling passes to the feet of Monaghan and Brown, both whom took too many touches before being dispossessed by Stinton & Docherty.

Five minutes later Stinton thwarted a meancing Port attack with a spectacular overhead kick which sent his mates immediately on the offensive.

While Port enjoyed more of the ball, Stephen Mooney's select were not going to be pushed aside, and in the 32nd minute Thomas Docherty would have edged his men in front had it not been for a terrific one-handed save from Mark Monk.

Play swept to the opposite end as port exerted pressure on the Greenock rearguard and, for once, Jim Brown was gifted sufficient time and space to control the ball butwas gutted when Graham got down bravely to block his effort.

As if to add to Port's misfortune the opposition, just four mins later, in the shape of Jp. Dow and Kevin Brown, opened up their defence with ease and fed the awaiting Harry McLachlan who wasted no time in bulging the ball into Monks net from eight yards.

An upbeat, Greenock, now 1-0 ahead, met the second half head on. However, had it not been for Graham's agillity between the posts Port would have pulled back the deficit.

The Port fans nearly raised the roof in the 75th minute as Dooner sent Monaghan clear.

The fomer Greenock player shrugged off a tackle and drew Graham off his line before drilling the ball under him and into the far corner to equalise.

Both sides battled for the winner, and it was only a Fraser Church Challenge which prevented Jamieson from scoring for the Port. Scott Nudget superb free-kick struck the woodwork, however, the sting was in the tail as Mooney led his men forward in the final push for glory. The Port defence buckled in the crucial 91st minute when Harry McLachlan capped a fine display by netting his second and Greenock's Winner..
