Shettleston Juniors 1 v 0 Greenock Juniors

Subs Used : Mooney, J.p Cannon, Flemming

Division tops Shettleston kept their place high above the pack when they beat Greenock Juniors 1-0 at home on Saturday.

A goal for Shettleston, and several missed opportunities for Greenock, left some in the visitor's camp feeling the three points should have comfortably gone to Stephen's Mooney side.

Despite numerous chances in both halves, the Greenock side were unable to finish and Shettleston used their only real chance to decide the game.

Greenock's first major opportunity came after 25minutes, when Thomas Docherty broke the offside trap after a header from McLachlan, and shot inches wide from eight yards.

As the game went on there seemed to be no luck at all for Greenock. Six corners in the last five minutes of the first half ended with nothing and opportunities were missed or thrown away after great play from Greenock's midfield.

Shettleston's only opportunity was finished well by Gary Espener who made the score 1-0. Throughout the second half Docherty kept giving the Shettleston Defence trouble on the right-hand side. Not all of his passes were picked up though, and despite his good play and other strong performances from J.p Dow and the Greenock attackers, there was never a positive end to their solid tream play.

Although they outplayed and outgunned the top club, they were unable to produce the goods and ended the game feeling it should have went their way.

Alec Wilson, the club's president, said : It was a game i think we should have won quite comfortably. "We missed some chances that we shouldn't have, so it's a shame that we lost this one.."

Club secretary Neil Martin said : "We had total control of the game and a barrel load of chances. Shettleston had one chance and used it the way we didn't"

The result leaves Shettleston even further ahead of Greenock, who have managed to hold onto second place in the division. With at least seven points between them and the competition, it will soon start to look hard for any team to catch up.
